CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea (Feb. 24, 2014) -- Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno visited the Camp Humphreys Military Community today, where he got a firsthand look at many of the transformation initiatives and construction projects currently underway here.

Odierno, the 38th U.S. Army Chief of Staff, received a detailed aerial tour of Camp Humphreys hosted by Col. Darin S. Conkright, the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Garrison commander.

After the aerial tour, Odierno visited the new Army Family Housing, which opened in March 2013. From the balcony of the visited unit, he was given a view of the new Humphreys Central Elementary School and Humphreys Middle/High School, which both opened in 2013 as well.

The visit continued with a tour of Humphreys Community Fitness Center, where he received the transformation brief entitled "Where We Are and Where We Are Headed, Building a 21st Century Installation."

In 2004, an agreement was reached between the United States and South Korean governments to move the bulk of U.S. forces to garrisons south of the Han River and relocate the United States Forces Korea and United Nations Command Headquarters to Camp Humphreys. When completed, Camp Humphreys will become the largest U.S. Army garrison in Asia.

Following the brief, the CSA's party visited the site of the new Brian Allgood Army Community Hospital and Camp Humphreys Dental Clinic, which broke ground in November 2012. According to officials, the new hospital will contain 68 beds and be able to support 65,000 eligible beneficiaries and 5,000 annual inpatient admissions. The dental clinic will have 79 chairs and be equipped to support 40,000 eligible beneficiaries per year.

Once the garrison tour concluded, Odierno addressed Soldiers assigned to the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, the largest military element at Camp Humphreys, in the 4-6 Attack Reconnaissance Squadron Hangar.

During that meeting, Odierno spoke to the Soldiers about his recently released Strategic Priorities: Adaptive Army Leaders for a Complex World; A Globally Responsive and Regionally Engaged Army; A Ready and Modern Army; Soldiers Committed to Our Army Profession; and The Premier All Volunteer Army. He also took time to speak individually with Soldiers and present some with coins.

In a Feb. 21 message to the entire Army, Odierno said, "Everywhere I travel across the Army, I am amazed by the hard work, selfless service and remarkable talents on display by Soldiers, civilians, family members and veterans alike. I thank each of you for your dedication and professionalism. I am proud to serve with you."

Camp Humphreys is home to the 2nd Infantry Division's 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, along with various military intelligence and support units, and the Army's most active overseas airfield and the largest construction site in the Department of Defense's history.
